February 27, 2015 – Lagos State Government says it has concluded arrangement to observer the February edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello said in a statement that the exercise which is the first for the year comes up on Saturday 28th February 2015, between 7.00am – 10.00am, with the attendant restriction of vehicular and human activities across the state.

We encourage our readers to always revisit the website between 12AM and 6AM on Saturday to confirm if the arrangement has been altered.

Tunji Bello however observed that so much waste have been generated since the last exercise and called on all to  embark massive cleaning and evacuation of domestic waste and cleaning of  tertiary drains in their respective neighbourhood.

He warned residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist from this illegal act adding that whoever does this will be prosecuted.

The Commissioner enjoined Lagosians to shun acts that could contribute to flooding, saying that “people should not dump waste in unauthorized places like canals and drainage channels. This is how we can all help the de-flooding programme of the state government to succeed, ” he said.

He emphasized that the State Government remains unwavering in its commitment to a clean, hygienic and flood-free environment and therefore urged Lagosians to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and unapproved sites especially now that global warming has broken nation’s barriers and boundaries on environmental matters.

“As a responsive and responsible government that wants succor for its citizenry, we urge all and sundry to rise up and take sanitation of their environment very important as this is one of the practical measures that can guarantee a flood free Lagos”, he added.

He warned private /commercial vehicle operators, interstate bus operators, state transport owners and road transport workers to comply with the  order on restriction of vehicular movement  between 7.00am-10.00am, noting that any vehicle caught violating this order would be dealt with appropriately, while passengers in such vehicles would also be prosecuted according to the state sanitation laws.

He also warned youths who play football on the road to desist. He further assured that Law Enforcement Agencies including Nigerian Police and officials from LAWMA, LASTMA and KAI had been fully mobilized for enforcement.
