September 25, 2014 – Lagos State Government has said it will hold the monthly Environmental Sanitation on Saturday September 27, 2014.
Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello said the exercise will hold between the hours of 7:00am-10am during which there will be restriction of human and vehicular movement.
The commissioner who said that “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” said the exercise would be dedicated to massive advocacy campaign to kick against – Open Urination/Defecation, dumping of waste in unauthorized places, flood prevention campaign, promoting the principle of personal hygiene, frequent hand washing, etc in order to attain a cleaner and sustainable environment.
“We would continue to sensitize the people of the state on the need to desist from unhygienic acts while not relenting in our efforts to ensure that we provide a cleaner and healthier environment that would be envy of all. We will not rest on our oars in order to achieve a better living environment”.
He reminded Lagosians that the rains is still here, as such residents should desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels and avoid errecting structures on drainage setbacks among others.
He warned residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist since it is inimical to the waste management policy of the State Government.
He said that LAWMA and PSP operators will be available statewide, to evacuate and cart away whatever waste generated during the exercise.
Bello similarly warned interstate bus operators, luxurious bus operators, state transport owners and road transport workers association to comply with the restriction of human and vehicular movement order between 7.00am-10.00am adding that any vehicle caught violating this order will be dealt with according to the Lagos State Sanitation Laws while passengers in such vehicles will also be prosecuted.
He explained that law enforcement agencies including Nigerian Police Force, Civil Defense and officials from LASTMA and KAI have been fully mobilized to enforce sanitation laws.
