A HEARTBROKEN father is demanding justice after his teenage son died just days after starting his life as a fresher at the Federal University of Environment and Technology, FUET, Ogoni, Rivers State, following a “playful” birthday prank.
Ebirien Godwin, 18, was celebrating his new life as a student when tragedy struck at FUET.
The youngster, who was due to celebrate his 19th birthday this week, had only just attended his matriculation ceremony—the formal event marking the start of his degree.
His devastated dad, Emmanuel Ebirien, rushed to the campus after receiving a frantic call from his son’s roommates saying the boy was unconscious.
Grieving Mr Ebirien said he was told his son had been invited to a birthday bash where students were “playfully” throwing water at each other.
But the fun allegedly turned fatal when a fellow student reportedly pushed the teen, causing him to slip and smash his head on a tiled floor.
Mr Ebirien said: “I questioned his roommates about what happened. They told me he was pushed. He hit his head and began bleeding.”
By the time the teenager reached the hospital, doctors could do nothing to save him and he was tragically pronounced dead.
The grieving father is now calling on the police and university bosses to launch a full investigation.
He added: “I want justice. I want anyone responsible to be held accountable.”
The “Matriculation” Milestone
In the Nigerian university system, Matriculation is a major life milestone, often celebrated as significantly as a graduation.
The Ceremony: New students wear academic gowns and take a formal oath of allegiance to the university.
The Celebration: It is common for families to travel long distances to attend, often hosting lavish parties on campus with food and photography.
For Ebirien, this should have been the proudest week of his life. Instead, his family is now planning a funeral for a date that should have been his 19th birthday.
