HOLLYWOOD TO HOLLY-CON? Nollywood Heartthrob Ike Ogbona Quizzed by FBI and EFCC Over $75,000 ‘Romance Scam’ of Devastated American Mum By London Sun Staff He is the smouldering, sharp-suited screen icon who has stolen the hearts of millions across Africa and the global diaspora. But today, Nigerian actor Ike Ogbona finds himself starring in a real-life legal thriller that could see him swapped from the red carpet to a federal prison cell. The Sun can reveal that Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), acting in direct coordination with the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has hauled the prominent Nollywood superstar in for intensive questioning and investigation. The allegation? A heartless, calculated $75,000 (£60,000) online romance scam that has left a vulnerable American woman emotionally shattered and financially ruined. The Michigan Connection The high-stakes international investigation was triggered by a formal complaint filed thousands of miles away in the United States. Kimberly Ann, a 49-year-old mother from Michigan, came forward to law enforcement after realizing the whirlwind digital romance she believed was leading to marriage was nothing more than a mirage. According to sources close to the investigation, Kimberly’s fairy-tale turned into a nightmare after she met a man she believed to be the dashing actor online early last year. What followed was a masterclass in psychological manipulation. Over twelve months, the fraudster showered Kimberly with affection, promises of a shared future, and declarations of undying love. Once the emotional hooks were deeply embedded, the requests for money began. Speaking under condition of anonymity, a source close to the US side of the investigation stated: ”The victim truly believed she was in a legitimate, monogamous relationship with a famous actor. She was manipulated into believing he was facing temporary liquidity issues due to international banking red tape and movie production delays.” Convinced she was supporting her future husband, Kimberly systematically drained her savings, sending a staggering $65,000 in multiple installments via wire transfers and cryptocurrency. The Final Betrayal The breaking point came just weeks ago. Desperate to finally hold her lover in her arms, Kimberly agreed to send an additional $10,000 to cover first-class travel expenses, a visa expedited fee, and security logistics for Ogbona to fly from Lagos to Michigan for a highly anticipated face-to-face meeting. The money was sent. The flight date arrived. But Ogbona never walked through the arrivals gate at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Instead of a joyous reunion, Kimberly was met with deafening silence. The WhatsApp messages that used to arrive every morning stopped. The late-night phone calls ceased. The man who had promised her the world had vanished into the digital ether, leaving her with an empty bank account and a broken heart. ”She realized she had been duped when the phone lines went dead,” an EFCC insider revealed. “That was when she took the brave step to go to the FBI. When the Americans looked at the digital footprint, the trail led straight to Nigeria.” Extradition Looming? In a dramatic development, EFCC operatives, armed with intelligence packages provided by the FBI, invited Ogbona to their Ikoyi headquarters in Lagos for interrogation. Investigators are currently auditing the actor’s personal bank accounts, electronic devices, and social media management logs to determine if he was directly pulling the strings or if his identity was hijacked by a sophisticated network of ‘Yahoo Boys’—Nigeria’s notorious cyber-fraudsters. While identity theft is a common defense in high-profile celebrity scam cases, security agencies are treating the allegations with utmost seriousness. If investigators uncover direct links between the funds and the actor, the consequences will be catastrophic for the Nollywood star. Under existing bilateral treaties between Nigeria and the United States, if Ogbona is found guilty or indicted by a US grand jury, he faces extradition to the United States to stand trial on federal charges of wire fraud and grand larceny. A conviction in an American federal court could carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years. Nollywood in Shock The news has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian film industry, the second-largest in the world by volume. Ogbona, known for playing the quintessential romantic lead, has long been a favorite of fans who adore his suave demeanor and impeccable style. As news of the FBI involvement filtered out, fans took to social media in a frenzy of disbelief. Neither Ogbona’s legal representatives nor his public relations team have released an official statement regarding the active investigation. However, sources close to the actor claim he maintains his absolute innocence, fiercely denying any involvement in the scamming of the American divorcee. For Kimberly Ann, however, the damage is already done. As the FBI and the EFCC piece together the digital breadcrumbs of this international scandal, a lonely woman in Michigan is left picking up the pieces of a life savings gone, and a love story that was only ever a script.
