PORT HARCOURT — The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable development across the Niger Delta region through strategic partnerships and robust collaborative initiatives designed to support vulnerable and underserved groups.
The interventionist agency made this commitment during a high-profile courtesy visit by the reigning Miss World Nigeria 2026, Miss Tamunosoye Karibi George, to the NDDC headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Friday.
Receiving the beauty queen, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, emphasized that the Commission’s philosophy is deeply rooted in impactful collaborations.
He noted that working alongside governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and development-focused stakeholders remains a critical pillar in achieving the Commission’s core mandate.
Dr. Ogbuku disclosed that the NDDC is fully prepared to explore viable avenues for collaboration with the beauty queen’s non-governmental organization.
This partnership, he noted, will specifically co-sponsor and drive programmes that directly target and alleviate the hardships faced by the less privileged in various Niger Delta communities.
Assuring Miss Karibi George of the Commission’s total support in actualizing her vision, Ogbuku stated that her humanitarian goals blend seamlessly with the corporate social responsibility and regional development blueprint of the NDDC.
The NDDC boss showered encomiums on the reigning Miss World Nigeria, describing her as a stellar role model whose hard work and remarkable achievements would undoubtedly inspire younger generations of women across the region and the country.
In a nostalgic moment, Dr. Ogbuku recalled that the Niger Delta region has a rich history of excellence on the global stage.
He cited the legendary Agbani Darego, who made history in 2001 as the first Black African woman to win the prestigious Miss World crown, noting that Miss Karibi George is walking in the footsteps of giants.
While formally congratulating the beauty queen on her historic victory, the Managing Director stated that the Commission takes immense pride in her accomplishment.
He reiterated that the NDDC is always delighted to back initiatives that promote social inclusion, eliminate inequality, and uplift the most vulnerable segments of society.
Ogbuku also used the platform to highlight several ongoing intervention programmes undertaken by the NDDC across the region. These, he noted, include free medical outreaches, educational support schemes, youth empowerment initiatives, grassroots skills acquisition training, and extensive community development projects.
In her remarks, the visibly elated Miss World Nigeria 2026, Miss Tamunosoye Karibi George, expressed her profound gratitude to the NDDC leadership for its warm reception, solid confidence, and willingness to support her as she prepares to represent the region and Nigeria on the global stage.
The beauty queen passionately outlined her flagship advocacy project, titled “Beyond Label.”
According to her, the project is sharply focused on promoting quality education, driving societal awareness, fostering social inclusion, and aggressively challenging deep-seated societal stereotypes against children living with disabilities and special needs.
Refusing to accept conventional, often limiting societal terminology, Miss Karibi George beautifully described special needs children as “diamond labels.”
She emphasized that despite being chronically underserved and overlooked in society, these children possess immense latent potential and can excel spectacularly if provided with equal opportunities and standard care.
”We want society to see ability before disability and possibility before limitation. These children are capable of achieving remarkable things if given the opportunity to thrive,” the beauty queen declared.
Sharing the inspiration behind her cause, Karibi explained that her deep passion for children with special needs was birthed during her time spent at a specialized school. She recounted witnessing firsthand the incredible transformation of these children—moving from complete dependence on caregivers to achieving admirable levels of independence through targeted education, mentorship, and the dedicated support of selfless teachers.
Also speaking during the visit, the beauty queen’s father, Mr. Karibi George, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the management of the NDDC for their immense encouragement and validation of his daughter’s triumph.
He described his daughter’s crowning glory as the direct product of years of grueling hard work, unyielding determination, and an innate commitment to humanitarian service. He noted that the “Beyond Label” initiative perfectly embodies the foundational philosophy of the global Miss World organization, which is “Beauty with a Purpose.”
Mr. George further asserted that the initiative would not only serve as a powerful platform to raise awareness and champion the cause of underserved children but would also inspire a new wave of radical inclusion, empathy, and acceptance within Nigerian society.
