ASABA — The people of Obodogwugwu Quarters, Okpanam Kingdom, in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, have filed a suit at the Delta State High Court challenging a proposed boundary delineation exercise involving the Ugbolu Settlement and Okpanam Kingdom.
In Suit No. AKU/47/2026, filed through their legal representatives, I. C. Ejiofor & Co., the claimants named Obi Okolo Iweanya (Obi Ugbolu)—representing the settlers of Ugbolu—as the first defendant.
Joined as co-defendants are the Deputy Governor of Delta State, the Attorney-General, the Surveyor-General, the Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Development, and the Delta State Boundary Technical Committee.
The claimants are seeking an injunction restraining the people of Ugbolu from entering the disputed land, known as Ani Uzo-Olu, which they maintain is part of their ancestral communal estate. They also want the court to stop the Delta State Government and its agencies from supervising, implementing, or participating in any boundary identification or adjustment exercise between Ugbolu and Obodogwugwu Quarters.
Additionally, the suit seeks declaratory reliefs and ₦500 million in damages for alleged trespass.
In a press statement issued Wednesday by the Concerned Citizens and Representatives of Obodogwugwu Quarters, the community stated that no historical or customary boundary exists between Ugbolu and Obodogwugwu, prompting them to seek judicial intervention to protect their ancestral rights.
”We have commenced this action to safeguard our ancestral communal rights and ensure that all issues arising from the proposed exercise are determined strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law,” the statement read.
The community appealed to the Delta State Government and relevant public officers to halt further administrative or physical steps on the boundary exercise while the matter remains sub judice.
”Where a dispute has become the subject of pending judicial proceedings, every responsible public authority should exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of rendering the proceedings nugatory,” the group added.
Calling for calm among residents of both communities, the representatives urged traditional leaders, youth bodies, and stakeholders to maintain peace and respect the legal process, reiterating their commitment to resolving the dispute through constitutional means rather than confrontation.
