ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Army has declared a three day mourning over the death of 17 gallant soldiers who were killed in combat by the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

I’m a statement, the Nigerian Army said it is declaring a three-day mourning period, from June 25th to June 27th, 2025, to honor the bravery and sacrifice of 17 courageous soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty at Kwana Dutse Local Government Area, Niger State.

The army said all Nigerian Army formations and units have been directed to fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast as a mark of honour.

‘During this period, we pay our deepest respects to these fallen heroes and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones”, adding that their unwavering dedication, valor, and sacrifice in defense of Nigeria will forever be remembered and cherished.

Giving insight into the incident that led to the death of the soldiers, the Nigerian Army said on 24 June 2025, forward operating bases in the general areas of Kwanar Dutse Mairiga and Boka Niger State, and Aungwan Turai Chikun LGA in Kaduna State, were attacked by bandits in a 3 pronged attack.

“In response, land and air component troops launched several counter-attacks that eliminated scores of bandits in the encounters.

“Sadly, some gallant warriors paid the supreme price in the day-long battles while four wounded in action troops are currently receiving treatment for their gunshot wounds”, the statement added.
