The brightness of Ibadan’s beloved Shooting Stars Sports Club (33 Stadium Stars) was firmly dimmed on Sunday afternoon as top-flight newcomers Kun Khalifat FC delivered a commanding performance to secure a 2-0 victory at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
Going into this Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Week 8 encounter, expectations were high that the experienced Oluyole Warriors would use their historical weight to impose themselves on the pitch. However, it was the hosts, dubbed the Pride of Imo State, who took complete control of the narrative from the opening whistle.
From the start, Shooting Stars struggled to establish their usual fluid passing rhythm under heavy pressure from the energetic Kun Khalifat midfield. The home side dictated the tempo throughout the first half, restricting the Stars to long-range efforts that rarely troubled the goalkeeper.
Kun Khalifat broke the deadlock midway through the first half following a sweeping move down the right flank.
A precise cross found center forward Henry Ezeonye, who directed a sharp header past the outstretched hands of the Shooting Stars goalkeeper to send the home fans into raptures. Despite efforts by the Stars to mount an immediate response, their attacking transitions were continually intercepted by Kun Khalifat’s defensive midfielder Chikamso Amaefula, who anchored the midfield with composure.
The second half saw Shooting Stars push forward in search of an equalizer, but their vulnerability on the counter-attack proved fatal. In the 72nd minute, a misplaced pass in the final third allowed Kun Khalifat to launch a lightning-fast break. A quick exchange of passes released the home attack into the penalty box, doubling the lead with a cool low finish into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Match Statistics and Analysis
When examining the underlying match statistics, Kun Khalifat’s tactical superiority is evident in every key metric. The home side controlled approximately fifty-six percent of the total ball possession, leaving Shooting Stars with forty-four percent as they chased the game for long spells.
In attack, Kun Khalifat registered fourteen total shot attempts, five of which were strictly on target, forcing three critical saves from the Shooting Stars goalkeeper. In contrast, Shooting Stars produced eight total shots throughout the ninety minutes, but only two managed to test the home stopper, underscoring their offensive frustration on the road.
The physical intensity of the encounter was reflected in the disciplinary and tactical figures. Kun Khalifat recorded eleven fouls, earning two yellow cards for tactical challenges in the second half. Shooting Stars committed fourteen fouls as desperation grew, picking up three yellow cards in the process.
The hosts also earned six corner kicks compared to four for the visitors, highlighting their sustained pressure in the attacking third. Furthermore, Shooting Stars were caught offside on three separate occasions as they tried in vain to breach a well-drilled Kun Khalifat defensive line that successfully kept a clean sheet.
This 2-0 defeat marks another challenging outing for Shooting Stars, whose search for consistency in the current NPFL campaign remains elusive. For Kun Khalifat FC, the three points reinforce their home fortress in Owerri as they continue to make an impression in Nigeria’s elite football division.
