PORT HARCOURT – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reiterated its commitment to building stronger families and communities across the region through deliberate investments in the development of the boy-child.
The commission stated this during the 2026 NDDC Day of the Boy-Child celebration held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The initiative, themed “Flourish and Thrive: Investing in the Boy Child for Stronger Families and Communities,” is being simultaneously implemented across the nine mandate states of the NDDC.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, noted that the initiative reflects a collective responsibility to nurture boys into responsible, confident, and productive young men who will contribute positively to the nation.
Ogbuku, who was represented by the NDDC Director of Social Services, Engr. Jeremiah Oritsejolomi, said, “We are investing in the future of the boy-child through education, mentorship, leadership development, positive values, and life skills that will prepare them for meaningful roles in society.”
He further urged the young participants to believe in themselves, pursue excellence, and strive to become leaders of integrity.
Echoing this sentiment, the Director of Education, Health, and Social Services, Dr. Patience Ezugu, emphasized that every boy deserves to grow up in a safe, supportive environment.
She urged the participants to embrace the mentorship provided by the program to add value to their communities.
In her remarks, the Director of Education, Dr. Angela Chukwudifu, admonished the boys to reflect deeply on the lessons learned and apply them toward shaping a better society.
Delivering a health talk at the summit, the NDDC Director of Health, Dr. Anthony Umezurike, raised concerns over peer pressure and modern vices, cautioning the youths against substance abuse.
”Many young boys are tempted to smoke, abuse drugs, and engage in harmful habits without understanding the long-term consequences. Avoid anything that can damage your mental health and destroy your future,” Umezurike warned, while advising them to prioritize nutrition and exercise.
Also speaking, the Executive Director of the BoyChild Support Network, Mr. Irimiagah Paul, reminded the audience that background does not limit success. “Every great leader was once a boy,” Paul said, urging them to define themselves by their values and character rather than the opinions of others.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the participants, Eze Fortune Solomon of Baptist High School and Ayooluwamide John of Praise El School described the program as an inspiring, life-changing experience that has equipped them for the future.
