YENAGOA, Bayelsa — THE Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially handed over a newly constructed residential accommodation complex and supporting facilities to the 16-Brigade of the Nigerian Army at its base in Ayama-Ogbia, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The gesture, according to the interventionist agency, is part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening security architecture and fostering sustainable peace across the Niger Delta region.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Saturday, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, emphasized that the Commission remains unwavering in its support for security agencies, noting that developmental milestones cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of rancor.
Dr. Ogbuku, who was represented at the event by the NDDC Director, Bayelsa State Office, Engr. Godknows Alamieyeseigha, explained that the construction of the facilities at the Nigerian Army Base was specifically undertaken to boost the morale of the troops and enhance security operations in the area.
”As an interventionist agency, the Commission is always prepared to support security agencies because there can be no development without peace,” Ogbuku stated.
He further assured that the robust partnership between the NDDC and the Nigerian Army would be sustained, expressing optimism that the military authorities would take full ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance.
Detailing the scope of the project, the NDDC boss disclosed that the newly commissioned quarters comprise:
A two-bedroom semi-detached bungalow
Four units of one-bedroom bungalows
A ten-unit self-contained bungalow block
To ensure uninterrupted comfort and operational efficiency, the NDDC also equipped the base with a dedicated generator house, a brand-new 100 KVA power-generating set, and a functional borehole water system.
Receiving the keys to the quarters, the Acting Garrison Commander of the 16-Brigade, Major H.M. Mohammed, expressed profound gratitude to the NDDC leadership for its continuous support to the Nigerian Army, particularly the 16-Brigade.
Major Mohammed lauded the current Board and Management of the NDDC for prioritizing the infrastructural needs of security agencies operating within the difficult terrains of the Niger Delta. He assured the Commission that the facilities would be put to excellent use and meticulously maintained to fulfill their intended purpose.
The handover ceremony was preceded by a joint inspection of the residential blocks and utility facilities by top NDDC officials and senior officers of the 16-Brigade, culminating in the formal signing of the project handover documents.
