PRESCRIBES PSYCHIATRIC TEST, LIFE JAIL FOR RAPIST
June 16, 2014 – Lagos State Government on Monday advocated for psychiatric test for sex offenders found to have sexually abused any person below the age of 18 years as a way of curbing incidents of rape in Nigeria.
Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Prince Adejoke Orelope Adefulire made the remarks while speaking at an occasion to mark the International Day for the African Child in Lagos.
She said incident of rape is on the rise. She alluded to cases of a father impregnating her daughter and uncles impregnating young girls put in their care.
“I lived with my uncle and all was well, I don’t know what has gone wrong, a father impregnating his daughter. There are cases of a father impregnating three daughters. Such a father must be made to go through a psychiatric test”, she noted.
She called on parents, guardian and all affected to do away with the culture of silence and ensure that such incidents are reported. Beyond the psychiatrist test, she said sex offenders must also be made to face life jail term.
Adefulire called on affected children or a child who knows any other child that is of school age kept out of school to report such cases to the Lagos State Government adding that government will provide the needed comfort and protection for the child in addition to scholarship to any level for the affected child.
She said parents and guardian have a responsibility to balance their career with their child development and be able to provide not just leadership for their children but commit to put a stop to all sort of sexual harassment.
The deputy governor who said she is offended by seductive dresses put on by young women said such dresses only portray such individuals as not only cheap but as as people who are not from descent homes.
She said that parents have a responsibility to stop their children from putting on dresses aimed at assaulting men adding that henceforth women found to have dressed in such offensive manner will be arrested by the Lagos State Government.
