JERUSALEM — A German activist and journalist who was detained after Israeli forces intercepted a humanitarian aid vessel bound for the Gaza Strip has filed a formal criminal complaint, accusing Israeli prison guards of sexual violence and rape during her custody.
The activist, 25-year-old Anna Liedtke, is the first participant from her flotilla mission to speak publicly on the record about experiencing rape while held by Israeli authorities. Her legal team in Israel recently submitted a complaint demanding a full criminal investigation into the conduct of the guards involved.
Liedtke’s public disclosure has thrown a spotlight on what international human rights organizations and United Nations bodies describe as a growing, deeply troubling pattern of sexual and gender-based violence inside Israel’s detention system.
The Interception and Detention
On October 8, 2025, Israeli naval forces intercepted the Wijdan (Conscience), a vessel operating under the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.
The ship, carrying dozens of medical professionals, humanitarian aid workers, and journalists, was intercepted in international waters approximately 100 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza. Israeli forces seized the vessel and forcibly transported those on board to the port of Ashdod.
According to Liedtke, her five-day detention across multiple facilities was marked by systemic abuse designed to degrade and silence international activists.
”It’s clear they want to break our will and silence us, making this so traumatic that we will never talk about Palestine again,” Liedtke said in an interview.
“But I am coming forward not for myself, but for all the women who have endured sexual violence and sexual torture in Israeli prisons—for those who did not survive these attacks, for those who are experiencing this abuse now, and for those who cannot speak about it.”
Liedtke’s lawyers detailed the allegations in a complaint submitted to Israeli authorities. According to her account, the most severe assault occurred while she was being transferred between the Ketziot and Givon detention facilities.
During a forced strip-search, Liedtke was taken to an area only partially partitioned by a curtain, rendering her visible to male guards in the hallway. When she refused to cooperate, female guards reportedly used physical force.
Physical Restraint: Two to three female guards pinned Liedtke to the ground, forcing her to her knees.
The Assault: While holding her hands to prevent movement and covering her mouth to muffle her screams, a female guard subjected her to non-consensual penetration.
Male Spectators: Liedtke reported hearing male guards laughing and watching the assault from beyond the open curtain.
Under Israeli law, rape is defined as any non-consensual penetration. Liedtke has maintained that she chose to pursue legal action because she refuses to carry the shame of the perpetrators’ actions.
A Documented Pattern of Abuse
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has stated that Liedtke’s experience is not an isolated incident. Several other international volunteers aboard the Conscience have come forward with similar allegations of sexual assault:
Human rights watchdogs, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and various UN bodies, have noted that sexual humiliation, forced stripping, and physical violence are frequently used against both foreign nationals and Palestinian detainees in Israeli facilities. In a recent report, CPJ collected dozens of testimonies from released journalists detailing a consistent environment of physical abuse, sleep deprivation, and threats of sexual violence.
Official Responses and Legal Outlook
The Israeli military and the Israel Prison Service (IPS) have categorically denied the allegations.
An IPS spokesperson stated that the agency is “not aware of such incidents” and asserted that all facilities operate in strict accordance with Israeli law and are subject to oversight by official bodies.
The Israeli military similarly rejected claims of abuse during the initial interception and custody transfer.
However, the legal complaint filed by Liedtke’s counsel demands an independent, thorough investigation into the specific guards involved. International human rights groups continue to lobby foreign governments, demanding that they pressure Israel to allow independent international monitors and investigators access to its detention centers to prevent further abuse.
