By our man on the Plateau
JOS – The stunning New Jos Stadium, perched high on the Plateau, may boast a picturesque setting, but it delivered anything but beauty yesterday as the local derby between Plateau United and Nasarawa United ended in a frustrating, goalless stalemate.
In a match that had all the build-up of a classic NPFL clash, the beautiful new ground—a massive upgrade for the region—became the stage for a dramatic letdown.
The impressive, modern structure seemed to suck the excitement right out of the game, with both sides fluffing their lines in front of goal.
The magnificent 44,000-seater stadium, a symbol of sporting ambition in central Nigeria, saw a high-energy but ultimately toothless display. Plateau United, the home side, controlled possession but couldn’t find the killer touch.
The home crowd, who had filled sections of the shiny new stands, groaned as their heroes missed a handful of clear-cut chances.
Veteran striker John Smith saw his close-range effort cannon off the woodwork in the first half, a moment that perfectly summed up the host’s luck.
Nasarawa United, the visitors, were content to soak up the pressure, transforming the open, modern pitch into a defensive fortress. Their keeper, a man-mountain between the sticks, barely had a truly difficult save to make, proving that even a state-of-the-art turf can’t guarantee a spectacle.
The final whistle blew, leaving the score Plateau United 0 – 0 Nasarawa United. It was a massive anti-climax for the fans and a disappointing result for a stadium that deserves to host more memorable moments than this drab Northern derby.
