September 5, 2014 – The United States of American has confirmed killing leader of the Somalian militants group, Al-Shabaab, Ahmed Godane, who claimed responsibility for deadly bombing of a shopping mall in Kenya in September 2013.

The group is affiliated to al-Qaeda and has claimed responsibility for series of attacks in Somalia and elsewhere forcing the US to put a bounty on him. Confirming the incident on Friday, White House Press Secretary, Josh Earnest said Godane was killed in a U.S. airstrike earlier this week.

“Godane’s removal is a major symbolic and operational loss to the largest al-Qaeda affiliate in Africa and reflects years of painstaking work by our intelligence, military and law enforcement professionals. Even as this is an important step forward in the fight against al-Shabab, the United States will continue to use the tools at our disposal – financial, diplomatic, intelligence and military –to address the threat that al-Shabab and other terrorist groups pose to the United States and the American people,” Earnest said in a statement.
