AWKA, Anambra – The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has urged women to move from the periphery to the center of national conversations on gender equality and development.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Awka to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day, themed “Give To Gain,” Dr. Soludo emphasized the need for women to participate actively in political discussions and decision-making processes.
According to her, while discussions and advocacy efforts have been made to improve women’s welfare, greater commitment and practical actions are required to achieve meaningful progress.
“Women must take the lead in shaping their future by participating actively in politics and occupying spaces where key decisions affecting society are made,” she stated.
Dr. Soludo commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for proposing legislation to reserve seats for women in the National Assembly, describing it as a commendable step towards improving representation.
She advocated for similar provisions in State Houses of Assembly to ensure broader participation of women in legislative processes.
Stressing the need to protect women from harassment, abuse, and exploitation, Dr. Soludo noted that women have demonstrated competence and professionalism in leadership roles. The Anambra State government has promoted policies supporting women and girls, creating opportunities for them to advance in the civil service.
Through her pet project, Healthy Living, Dr. Soludo will continue to encourage women to adopt healthy lifestyles and participate in community initiatives aimed at improving societal wellbeing.
“More platforms will be created to enable women across the state to collaborate and pursue common goals that would strengthen their collective voice and contributions to development,” she said.
