THREE men have been hauled into custody following a series of dramatic dawn raids across Britain in a major probe into suspected Chinese spying.
In a move that has sent shockwaves through Westminster, it emerged last night that one of those detained is the husband of a sitting Labour MP.
David Taylor, 39, was snatched by Counter Terrorism officers at an address in London on suspicion of “assisting a foreign intelligence service.” His wife, Joani Reid, the Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, serves on the powerful Home Affairs Select Committee.
The arrests were made under the Government’s tough new National Security Act 2023, designed to hunt down foreign agents operating on British soil.
While Mr Taylor was being held in the capital, two other men were seized hundreds of miles away in Wales.
A 68-year-old was arrested in Powys, while a 43-year-old was detained in Pontyclun.
Cops also stormed properties in East Kilbride, Scotland, and Cardiff as part of the massive intelligence-led operation.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis warned MPs in the Commons that there would be “severe consequences” if it is proven that Beijing attempted to interfere in UK affairs. He told the House:
”We remain deeply concerned by an increasing pattern of covert activity from Chinese state-linked actors targeting UK democracy.”
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said her team had seen a “significant increase” in national security cases recently.
She added: “Today’s arrests are part of a proactive investigation. While these are serious matters, we do not believe there to be any imminent or direct threat to the public.”
MP Joani Reid issued a statement last night insisting she had “never seen anything” to make her suspect her husband had broken the law. She added: “I am not part of my husband’s business activities and neither I nor my children are part of this investigation.”
The three men remain in police custody as detectives continue to comb through evidence.
The Law: The arrests were made under Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023. This specific section covers “Assisting a Foreign Intelligence Service,” which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.
Political Context: This incident is particularly sensitive as it involves the spouse of a Labour MP. It follows years of warnings from MI5 regarding Chinese attempts to cultivate British politicians and influence the UK democratic process through “covert activity.”
The Suspects: * David Taylor (39): A lobbyist and director of Asia House, a think tank focusing on trade between Asia and the West.
The Welsh Connections: Two other men (aged 68 and 43) were arrested in mid and south Wales, indicating a cross-border investigation involving CTP Wales and CTP Scotland.
Previous Tensions: Relations between London and Beijing have been strained following previous allegations of espionage, including a 2024 case involving a parliamentary researcher that was eventually dropped, sparking a major political row over security.
