ORLANDO CITY 0
HOUSTON DYNAMO 1
IT WAS the night the Lions forgot how to roar and a Mexican maestro showed them exactly how it’s done.
Houston Dynamo secured their first-ever victory on Orlando soil, and they had their talismanic skipper Héctor Herrera to thank for a moment of pure class that settled a gritty MLS encounter.
On a night where the stars were expected to shine under the Florida lights, it was Herrera who burned brightest. In the 75th minute, with the game deadlocked and the home crowd growing restless, a loose ball bounced in the box like a live grenade.
While others hesitated, the former Atletico Madrid man didn’t blink, smashing a clinical finish into the back of the net to silenced the Inter&Co Stadium.
But this wasn’t just a one-man show. If Herrera provided the punch, veteran keeper Jimmy Maurer provided the shield.
Coming off the bench at half-time for his first MLS appearance in over a year, Maurer rolled back the years with a string of heroic saves. He denied Orlando’s Justin Ellis with a full-stretch dive that had the traveling Houston fans chanting his name.
For Orlando, it was a night of “what ifs.” Martín Ojeda celebrated his 100th start for the club, but there was no party atmosphere at the final whistle.
Despite the creative efforts of Iván Angulo and the late introduction of rookie Harvey Sarajian, the Lions simply couldn’t find a way past a Houston defense anchored by the impressive Agustin Resch.
Orlando dominated the ball, but as interim boss Martín Perelman admitted, possession doesn’t win prizes:
“We were the only team on the field for long stretches, but you have to convert. They found one moment in transition, and that’s the game.”
HÉCTOR HERRERA (Houston): The captain led by example. In a game of tight margins, his composure was the difference between a point and a historic three.
