AWKA, Nigeria – Anambra state Resident Electoral Commission REC, Dr Queen Elizabeth Agwu has stated that despite insecurity in the state election would be held in all the 5720 polling units , apart from the six with no registration.
Agwu stated this on Friday while briefing journalists on the commission’s readiness for the conduct of 2023 general elections. According to her, security men have been deployed to all local governments and are poised for actions.
” Election will be held in all the places in Anambra state despite insecurity. We have deployed staff in all polling units in the state. We have alot of security personnel in the state and we are conducting elections in all the polling units in the state . We don’t want to disfranchise anybody in the state ” she said .
She also stated that the commission has fully deployed materials to all the 21 local government council in the state and it is prepared for peaceful conduct of the elections.
According to him, federal government has deployed enough security men in the system to ensure that election was peaceful and free. She said that the commission will conduct free and fair elections in the state inline with INEC directive.
He urged Ndi Anambra to come out enmass to vote for the candidate of their choice as every vote in the state will count.
“Don’t stay in your house and say your votes will not count, I want to assure you that every vote in the state will count, please come out and vote” she said . On whether she was able to assure corps members about their security, she said INEC went to camp and assured them of their security.
According to her, the Security operatives have made enough security provision for them and there was no need to panic. She further noted that the level of insecurity in the state are being over exaggerated as what the social media are saying is different from the reality.
“The so called flash points areas in the state are false. In those areas workers are there. The insecurity in Anambra is not as bad as being broadcast in the social media. People are just heating up the system. We will conduct election in Ihiala local government because people are contesting for positions in the area” she said .
