ABUJA, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has said that electronic transmission of results the way it happened during the governorship election in Ekiti and Osun states has come to stay.
INEC make the clarification following reports in the online media that the commission may have reverted to the old manual transmission of results that paved ways for massive rigging of elections and consequent voters apathy.
Replying to the development, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Voter Information and Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye said an interview granted by an INEC official to a national newspaper was being misinterpreted.
To put the record straight, INEC stated: “For clarity, the procedure for result transmission remans the same as in the recent governorship election in Ekiti and Osun state. There will be no change in all future elections, including the 2023 general elections”.
INEC assured Nigerians that the “electronic transmission of results has come to stay”, adding that electronic transmission of results adds to the credibility and transparency of the process when citizens follow polling unit level results on the INEC viewing portal in real time on election day.
“There will be no change or deviation in subsequent elections”, Okoye said. He added that the entire gamut of result management is provided for in Sections 60, 62, and 64 of the Electoral Act 2022 and that in line with the Act, the commission released procedures which has been uploaded on INEC website.
He appealed to Nigerians to avail themselves of the provision of the Electoral Act and explanation on procedures instead of reaching conclusion on the basis of media headlines.
