ABUJA, Nigeria – Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye today surrendered to the policemen who have laid siege on his Abuja residence for days.
The senator who was looking quite exhausted surrendered and was whisked away by officials of the Nigerian Police in a car. Melaye has been having a running battle with the Nigerian Police.
Few weeks ago, the embattled senator alerted members of the public that the Nigerian Police is planning to arrest and kill him, using a case that has been investigated and closed. The Nigerian Police refuted his alert and challenged him to confess if he has committed any office. In fact the police described his alert as amounting to nothing but hate speech.
Few days later, the police laid siege in his home, seeking his arrest in connection with attempted murder. The Nigerian Police said Melaye has been evading arrest since July 2018 when it obtained a duly signed warrant of arrest. According to the police Melaye’s convoy attacked and almost killed a policeman currently bedridden in hospital.
Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani has tweeted that the distinguished Senator Dino should be treated with dignity and honour and his fundamental rights respected, now that he has reportedly turned himself up to the Police.
