ABUJA, Nigeria – Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Kpotun-Idris relocated to Benue State immediately President Muhammadu Buhari ordered him to do so on January 10 and had meeting with Governor Samuel Ortom on January 11, 2018, National Coordinator of United Young Professionals, Adewole Kehinde has said.
The group issued the statement following reports in Premium Times, that the IGP is yet to relocate to Benue State.
According to the group, it is wrong for Premium Times to say the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim K. Idris did not relocate to Benue State despite the directive issued on January 9, by Pres. Buhari to move to Benue State to restore order and forestall further attacks on villagers by suspected herdsmen.
“It is on record that the Inspector General of Police spent 8 days in Benue State accompanied by the DIG Operation, Joshak Habila including print and electronic media. The IGP was on assessment tour of Logo and Guma Local Government Areas of Benue State, Adewole said.
He further reiterated that the Inspector General of Police toured the state; held talks with Benue political and religious leaders and visited camps of the Internally Displaced Persons in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
“We wish to remind Premium Times that the purpose of the Inspector General of Police visit to Nasarawa State was to see those who are in the IDP camp as a result of the killings; to assure them of their safety. The IGP has not in any way disobey the President’s order as insinuated by the Premium Times reporter.
Adewole further reiterated that there is no need for the Inspector General of Police to remain in Benue State since all adequate security arrangement has been put in place and the State was peaceful as at the time he came back to Abuja to look into the administrative operation of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The IGP, as part of ensuring relative peace and sanity in Benue State, has changed the Commissioner of Police; who has made several arrests and charged 19 suspects to court and the DIG Operations that has been in Benue State since January 2018 has coordinated the activities of Policemen in the area adequately.
“It is absolutely false to have said that the Nigeria Police Special Forces has been avoiding Logo Local Government Area of Benue State and that the Security forces appear unable to withstand the firepower of the attackers lurking in the bushes around the villages, the statement concluded.
