Nigeria, February 24, 2016 – The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has stepped up its monitoring and surveillance activities in domestic, industrial and public facilities in the state as part of efforts to prevent loss of lives and properties.
Speaking to journalists, General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Michael Akindele said the surveillance and Monitoring unit was set up as a practical approach to reducing emergencies/disasters and in the process reducing the huge expenses borne by the state government on relief assistance to victims of various disasters.
The General Manager advised members of the public to play a pivotal role in disaster mitigation/prevention and consequently reduce hazards and vulnerabilities by ensuring that distress calls are relayed to the agency through the toll free line 767/112.
He stated that these calls are usually worked upon by monitoring and surveillance unit adding that the agency has in the past received relevant information from the public on distresses such as structural defective buildings, schools, companies and building erected on wet land zones with poor engineering work which may degenerate into disasters with negative consequences.
“The present administration of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor of Lagos State will not accept complacency on the part of any individual or organization which may result in huge material losses and sometimes avoidable fatalities when disaster occurs ”.
The LASEMA Boss noted that activities of the unit have yielded tremendous achievement with the reduction in numbers of disasters in Lagos.
