A lawmaker representing Ekiti North 1 Federal Constituency, Mr. Bimbo Daramola has alleged that the Director General of the Nigeria Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mrs. Aruma Oteh is not qualified to head the commission hence the National Assembly is insisting that she should be booted out of office.

“When we said Aruma Oteh should go, it was because she is not qualified for the position. She is first class material, first class computer scientist, served in ADP. But the Investors and Security Act, the law that establishes SEC says that whoever will be the DG of SEC must have 15 years cognate experience and be a financial member,” the lawmaker said adding that when the law is passed and declared an Act of the Parliament, the legislator must not be seen to abdicate his responsibility.

“They must own up to it and defend it so that people do not take any other one that you do for a ride. This is what the law says and you cannot negotiate the law. This is one of the problems we have in this country; we negotiate ourselves away from law and order. And because we relapse laws at the whims and caprices, our laws in this country recognize the faces of people. When you have a society when the law recognizes faces of individuals you will succeed in building individuals and never buildings institutions. If you have strong individuals and you have weak institutions, God help you. The only thing that can defend us corporately is how strong our laws are. In fact, one of the good qualities of law is that it should be justifiable and when it is justifiable it means it does not recognise the face of anybody”, he said.

The lawmaker who spoke in Ekiti said it is on this basis that the symbol of the judiciary is a blind virgin; which means purity and refusal to be compromised by wealth, position or status.

“It is blind so that it cannot be fair to me as my brother or my sister. It has a sword that is standing in the middle to say this sword can sway anyway. So, if the law says Aruma Oteh is not qualified and somebody decides to keep her in that job, what examples are we laying?”, he queried.
