The Lagos State Government today said it has directed security operatives step up operation toward sealing up houses lining major roads where residents are found to be hanging clothes loosely either on the balcony or on the fence.
Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello gave the directive while monitoring the monthly environmental exercise in Idimu, Lagos. He said the stat government will also demolish structures found to have been erected on areas that should be reserved for roads and drainage channels in the Idimu area so as to check flooding which is threatening to efface properties in the area.
He added that the primitive practice presently constitutes environmental nuisance in the state.
“The action has started already and we are going to intensify it. All our agencies, Lagos Waste Management Authority, Lagos State Environment Agency, Kick Against Indiscipline and other relevant agencies will be involved in the enforcement of this order. We are going to seal-up houses where residents are found to be hanging clothes indiscriminately”, he said, adding that the primitive practice presently constitutes environmental nuisance in the state.
He said the Lagos State Government finds it unacceptable that traders are using road setback at Idimu area to display their wares adding that the local government chairman has been instructed to sanction traders involved in the practice otherwise the state government would be forced to shut down the market for constituting nuisance to other road users.
Bello commended the level of compliance in the exercise, adding that the environment is generally clean compared to popular areas in Lagos. He said the state government will review the operations of those involved in Private Sector Participation (PSP) scheme in refuse collection so as to address problems working against its effective operation.
