BROVARY, Kiev – Not less than 17 people have been confirmed killed when a modern helicopter conveying government officials crashed on a school in Brovary, Kiev, Ukraine.

 Among those killed were the Interior Minister, Denys Monastyrsky, 42, his deputy and state secretary.  The helicopter which burst into flames came down at around 6:30 am local time.

Also killed were parents and  four children who were at the school to drop off their children in the morning hours, authorities in Ukraine have said.

Monastyrsky,  according to reports was one of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s longest serving political advisers in the cabinet.

Speaking on the incident, Deputy head of Ukraine’s presidential office, Kyrylo Tymoshenko said  the government officials were heading to  the war zone when the helicopter came down.

The head of police in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, Volodymyr Tymoshko, said the ministerial team were on their way to meet him there and he had spoken to them only yesterday.

The interior ministry has the vital task of maintaining security and running the police during the war.

President Zelensky described the incident as a terrible tragedy that claimed the lives of “true patriots”. He has ordered investigation into circumstances surrounding the crash.
