LAGOS, Nigeria – Amnesty International has been put on notice as officials of the Lagos State Government connived with the Nigeria Police to orchestrate arrest of Nigerians who have made good their threat to protest at the Lekki toll gate following the decision of the Justice Doris Nkwuobi Panel set up by the Lagos State Government to open the Lekki toll gate for normal business.
The decision of the panel to open the toll gate just after three months after the Lekki blood-letting has infuriated many who felt the crime scene ought to be a memorial in honour of those murdered in October 20, 2020 by the army invited by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State even before the panel could conclude sitting.
At a press conference in Lagos, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo had said that though it is constitutional to protest it is however unlawful to violate COVID-19 Executive Order prohibiting gathering in excess of 50 persons.
But the youths who protested today in defiance of heavy police presence at the toll gate said protest is an undeniable element of democracy.
Reacting to the development, Amnesty International Nigeria, said it has been informed by sources and video evidence of arrest of several protesters with harrowing experience of torture against detainees.
“Amnesty International was informed that several protesters, were arrested and have been detained. Several sources, including video evidence; tell harrowing stories of widespread use of torture and other ill-treatment against detainees”, amnesty said.
On the internet are videos of #endSARS protesters who have been put in Black-Maria labeled LCC, the concessionaire, believed to be the arrowhead of those agitating for the opening of the Lekkitollgate for business. See video HERE:
Among those arrested are Emmanuel Ogboje, Mr. Macoroni and many others. The protesters sat peacefully on the bare floor demanding justice for those murdered under the command of the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian army. See video the brave Nigerians as uploaded by Arise TV HERE
