BY OUR MAN AT THE ALVALADE
FORGET the Portuguese sun—it was Arsenal’s heavy hitters who brought the heat to Lisbon last night. In a cagey Champions League quarter-final that looked destined to end in a stalemate, super-sub Kai Havertz stepped off the bench to silence the Estádio José Alvalade and put the Gunners within touching distance of the final four.
It wasn’t pretty, and for 90 minutes, it wasn’t particularly clinical, but Mikel Arteta’s men showed the grit of champions. While the scoreline reads a modest 1-0, the performances of Arsenal’s spine were anything but small-scale.
THE KING OF KAI-OS
He’s the man for the big occasion, isn’t he? Kai Havertz was introduced late to find a spark, and in the 91st minute, he provided the wildfire. After a slick exchange involving fellow sub Gabriel Martinelli, the German international showed ice-cool composure to slot the ball home, sending the travelling Gooners into delirium. It was a “right place, right time” moment that has become the hallmark of his Arsenal career.
RAYA THE RESCUE ACT
If Havertz provided the finish, David Raya provided the foundation. The Spaniard was nothing short of heroic between the sticks. Early in the first half, he produced a save that defied the laws of physics, tipping Maximiliano Araújo’s goal-bound rocket onto the crossbar.
Raya wasn’t finished there. As Sporting threw the kitchen sink (and the plumbing) at Arsenal in the closing stages, he denied both Geny Catamo and Luis Suarez with world-class reflexes. On a night where the Lions roared, Raya was the lion-tamer.
MIDFIELD MASTERCLASS
In the heart of the park, Martin Ødegaard pull the strings with his usual elegance, though he was unlucky to see a first-half effort parried away. Alongside him, Martin Zubimendi thought he’d broken the deadlock earlier in the second half, only for a pedantic VAR review to chalk it off for a marginal offside.
VERDICT
Sporting CP arrived with a fearsome home record—16 straight wins—but they met a London side that simply refused to blink. Arteta’s stars stood tall when the pressure reached boiling point.
The Lions might still have a bite left in them for the second leg at the Emirates, but with Havertz in this form and Raya guarding the gates, Arsenal look like a team destined for the big one in Munich.
