NECO WILLIAMS proved he’s worth his weight in gold as his second-half rocket snatched a vital point for Nottingham Forest in a gritty 1-1 draw against high-flying Aston Villa.
The Welsh wizard spared MURILLO’S blushes after the Brazilian defender’s nightmare moment threatened to derail Forest’s survival mission. In a game billed as a clash of the titans at both ends of the table, it was the men in the trenches who stood tallest.
Villa arrived in the East Midlands looking to tighten their grip on a Champions League spot, and they were gifted the lead in the 23rd minute.
England star MORGAN ROGERS, who was a thorn in Forest’s side all afternoon, whipped in a low, fizzing cross from the byline. In his desperate scramble to clear, Murillo could only turn the ball into his own net, leaving goalkeeper MATZ SELS stranded.
For a moment, the City Ground fell silent, fearing the worst against Unai Emery’s well-oiled machine.
But Forest didn’t crumble. With the roar of the home faithful behind them, they fought back with the tenacity of a side refusing to go down.
The breakthrough came seven minutes before the break. NECO WILLIAMS, playing with the freedom of a winger rather than a wing-back, pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the area. With one touch to set himself, he unleashed a thunderbolt that flew past Villa’s stand-in keeper MARCO BIZOT—who was drafted in late after EMILIANO MARTINEZ pulled out in the warm-up.
The second half was a tale of “what if” for the visitors. OLLIE WATKINS was uncharacteristically wasteful, blazing a golden chance over the bar, while Rogers saw a late effort skim the woodwork.
At the other end, MORGAN GIBBS-WHITE pullled the strings in midfield, nearly finding a winner, but a draw was perhaps the fairest result for two sides who left everything on the turf.
STAR MAN: Neco Williams (Nottingham Forest)
VILLA’S BEST: Morgan Rogers
