BAUCHI, Nigeria – NPFL giants Rivers United dug deep to secure a crucial 1-0 victory over a stubborn Wikki Tourists side yesterday, but once again, it was their imposing home ground, the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, that proved to be the difference-maker.

The Pride of Rivers continue to turn their Port Harcourt fortress into a nightmare trip for visiting teams, making a mockery of the Tourists’ attempts to breach their solid backline in a fiercely contested NPFL clash.

A solitary strike from Taofeek Otaniyi in the 19th minute was all United needed, a goal that propelled them to the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League table.

However, the tight scoreline doesn’t tell the full story of the Tourists’ second-half fightback, which was ultimately repelled by the intimidating atmosphere and solid turf of the 16,000-capacity Yakubu Gowon Stadium.

Rivers United have now extended their incredible unbeaten run to nine games, a run built almost entirely on their home dominance. The stadium, formerly known as the Liberation Stadium, has become a grinding stone where opponents’ title hopes go to perish.

Wikki Tourist manager, whose side now languishes in mid-table, will be left ruing the missed opportunities in a tense second half where the vociferous home crowd played a major role in keeping the pressure on the visitors.

The 30,000-capacity ground has long been an intimidating venue, and yesterday it delivered again for the home side, showcasing why the NPFL title race is becoming a two-horse affair between teams that can win on the road and those who can turn their home turf into a championship-winning citadel.
