WASHINGTON – Donald J. Trump’s legal team has threatened the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) with a significant lawsuit, alleging the public service broadcaster manipulated footage of a recent speech, prompting the BBC to announce it would review the letter.

According to a report from Fox News, the former president’s lawyers are demanding that the BBC retract what they describe as “false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory statements” by Friday.

Failure to comply, the Fox News report alleged, would result in a $1 billion lawsuit being filed against the corporation.

The legal action centers on the claim that the BBC broadcast a deceptively edited version of Mr. Trump’s remarks.

A spokesperson for the BBC confirmed receipt of the correspondence late Thursday.

“The BBC can confirm it has received a letter from Mr. Trump’s legal representatives,” the broadcaster said in a brief statement, adding that it would be “reviewing the letter.”

The statement did not elaborate on the specific claims made regarding the alleged editing or the nature of the speech in question.

The threat marks the latest high-profile legal challenge brought by Mr. Trump against a major news organization.

Throughout and after his presidency, Mr. Trump has frequently clashed with media outlets, often labeling coverage he deemed critical as “fake news.”

A $1 billion demand signals a substantial escalation in these ongoing tensions between the former president and international news media.

The legal letter reportedly sets a hard deadline for the retraction, putting pressure on the BBC to respond quickly to avoid potentially facing one of the largest defamation suits threatened by a public figure in recent history.
