Strange Wedding of Physical, Mentally Challenged Couples in Lagos

September 19, 2014 – Two physical and mentally challenged trainees of the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Persons with Disabilities at Owutu have been joined together in holy matrimony.

The couple are Samiat Abiola, a 20 year old indigent of the centre with no known relative who had been under “Care and Protection” for over 10 years by the State Government while the groom, Dare Akinyemi, is a 42 year old ex-trainee of the centre.

The event which took place at the centre in Ikorodu was witnessed by family members of the groom and officials of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Lagos State for the bride.

Simiat has a low intelligence quotient (IQ) and cannot write her name despite several years of coaching while Akinyemi has an extremely low IQ and speech impairment but had improved after a lot of mentorship. He passed out of the centre with a certificate in shoe making.

The bride was however given out in marriage by the Director, Rehabilitation, Mr. Olabode Ajao in a traditional wedding ceremony and an inter denominational church service.

In his address, Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth and Social Development, Dr. Enitan Dolapo Badru charged the grooms family and members of the society to assist the state government in re- integrating the couple into the society so that they could adapt to a new life of marriage and family.

Enitan who spoke through Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Olanrewaju Rufai, told the groom to take care of his wife, noting that the Lagos State Government has trained and empowered him in the vocation of Shoe making and wished them a happy married life.
