BAUCHI, Nigeria – THE iconic Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium has seen some historic battles, but on Sunday it played host to a tactical tug-of-war as Wikki Tourists and Kun Khalifat cancelled each other out in a 0-0 NPFL stalemate.
Under the sweltering heat of the 25,000-capacity Bauchi landmark, the “Tourists” looked to exploit their home-turf advantage.
The ATB Stadium—named after Nigeria’s first Prime Minister—usually serves as a fortress for Wikki, but the visitors from Owerri clearly hadn’t read the script.
Kun Khalifat, the league’s newest giant-killers, showed no fear of the intimidating atmosphere. They sat deep, frustrating the hosts and turning the historic venue into a graveyard for Wikki’s attacking ambitions.
Despite the roar of the Bauchi faithful echoing around the open-air stands, Wikki struggled for rhythm.
The bumpy surface at the ATB seemed to suit Kun Khalifat’s physical approach as they broke up play and slowed the tempo at every opportunity.
The best chance of the match fell to the hosts late in the second half, but the Kun Khalifat keeper produced a sprawling save to keep the scores level and leave the home fans heading for the exits in disappointed silence.
For Wikki, it is two points dropped at a venue where they usually dominate.
For Kun Khalifat, escaping the “Bauchi Cauldron” with a clean sheet is a major statement of intent in their debut top-flight campaign.
The NPFL title race continues to heat up, but for these two sides, the search for a clinical edge goes on.
