The family of a man shot dead by police in Nigeria has been promised “total justice” after the officers involved were sensationally sacked and ordered to face prosecution.
Mr. Mene Ogidi was killed on April 26 during a horror encounter in Effurun, Delta State, sparking national outrage and an immediate crackdown from top police brass.
”No One Is Above The Law”
In a swift response to the tragedy, Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered the immediate arrest and transfer of the unit involved to the capital, Abuja.
A Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) investigation found that the lead officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in “gross violation” of firearms regulations. The board described the shooting as:
Unlawful and unprofessional
A “zero-tolerance” breach of police conduct
The IGP has now approved the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and his colleagues, handing them over to the courts to face criminal charges for the extrajudicial killing.
The police chief offered his “deepest and most solemn condolences” to the Ogidi family, acknowledging the immense pain of their loss.
”No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” the IGP warned in a stern message to his own force. “Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”
The move is being seen as a major step toward institutional accountability in a country where police conduct has frequently come under international scrutiny.
The Nigeria Police Force has urged the public to remain calm, promising that justice will not only be served but will be “seen to be served” to restore public confidence.
