KYIV, Ukraine — Russian strikes across Ukraine over the last day killed four people, including one child, and wounded more than 80 others, with residential buildings and a prominent medical facility bearing the brunt of the assault, President Volodimir Zelensky told the nation on Sunday.
The attacks, which Mr. Zelensky described as “extremely brutal,” centered on the capital, Kyiv, the surrounding region, and the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, with officials beginning immediate recovery and restoration efforts.
In Kyiv, one of the primary targets was the Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology, which the President called one of the leading medical institutions in the country and the region.
Two people were killed at the institute, and one of its buildings sustained significant damage.
“In total, only in Kyiv, 32 locations sustained damage,” Mr. Zelensky said in his statement, released on Sunday.
The President detailed a toll that underscored the ongoing threat to Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.
Beyond the two fatalities at the Kyiv cardiology institute, another two people, including a child, were killed elsewhere in the country. More than 80 people were reported injured across the affected regions.
While the strike on Zaporizhzhia was noted as particularly savage, Mr. Zelensky said there were fortunately no fatalities in that city, though nearly 40 people were wounded overnight.
All of the injured were said to be receiving necessary medical attention.
Mr. Zelensky also addressed Russia’s “traditional tactic” of targeting the country’s utilities, confirming that energy facilities were among the locations struck. The attacks renew fears that Russia is again attempting to cripple Ukraine’s power grid and precipitate a major blackout as the year progresses.
The President offered his condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed, and publicly thanked the numerous personnel involved in the emergency response, including State Emergency Service workers, medical teams, police officers, and municipal services.
The government, he added, was tasked with providing prompt assistance for the swift restoration of damaged facilities, like the cardiology institute.
