Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Mr. Mohammed Bello-Oyinlomo made the revelation at the annual ministerial press briefing in Lagos. He said a total of 1, 774 calls were received during the period out of which 1,340 were fire calls, 100 specific for rescue mission, while 318 were false calls.
He said that 16 buildings collapsed during the period adding that the department will continue its responsibilities and attributed the development to tremendous support from the current administration.
The commissioner explained that fire service stations at Abesan Housing Estate, Ipaja and Lekki have been completed and that it will soon be handed over for operational use. “The stations will no doubt further enhance proximity of the fire service to the people at Ipaja, Lekki Phase II and environs”, he said.
He noted that the state government has received a consignment of 500 fire proof clothing, 500 safety helmets, 500 safety booths and 500 hand gloves. “These state-of-the-art apparels are to ensure maximum protection for the firemen while discharging their duties and also to enhance job performance, he said.
The commissioner noted that Lagos State has acquired 32 new customized fire trucks made up of 15 dragon pumpers, 15 snow dragon and two aerial ladder purchased directly from the manufacturers in the United States.
“The unique feature of these state-of-the-arts fire trucks include the use of Compressed Air Foam(CAF) designed to substantially reduce the volume of water conventionally needed to fight fire”, he said.
