DOHA, Qatar — The smallest pitch at Qatar’s sprawling Aspire Zone complex became the setting for one of the biggest shocks of the FIFA Under 17 World Cup today, as Uganda defeated African powerhouse Senegal 1-0 in their Round of 32 clash.
Aspire Zone’s reputation as a world-class training hub was momentarily eclipsed by the seismic result achieved on the humble turf of Pitch 7.
Far from the gleaming main stadiums, the intimate venue provided the backdrop for the Ugandan Cubs to pull off an absolute smash-and-grab against the Young Lions of Teranga, who had been tipped by many as potential finalists.
The single, decisive blow came in the 15th minute when midfielder Abubakar Walusimbi unleashed a thunderous, 25-yard drive. The ball rocketed past the outstretched Senegalese keeper, sending the small but passionate Ugandan contingent at the Aspire Zone Pitch 7 into delirium.
Senegal, who had dominated their group stage campaign with a free-scoring attack, found the Ugandan defence—led masterfully by Captain Hamuza Sengooba and goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi—a brick wall.
Despite wave after wave of pressure in the suffocating desert heat, the Young Lions could not find a way through the resolute CECAFA champions.
The victory, secured on a pitch usually reserved for training sessions and lower-profile fixtures, highlights Uganda’s incredible journey.
After securing their first-ever World Cup win against France in the group stage, the Cubs have now delivered an even bigger blow, knocking out one of Africa’s favourites.
For Senegal, the early exit is a disaster.
But for Uganda, the dream continues, proving that sometimes, the biggest miracles happen on the smallest stages.
