Xabi Alonso’s high-stakes gamble paid off in spectacular fashion as Chelsea fought back from two goals down to destroy Leeds United 6-3 in an unforgettable EFL Cup third-round match at Stamford Bridge.
Trailing 2-0 early in the second half after a nightmare start, Chelsea produced an astonishing surge of four goals in just 12 minutes to punch their ticket to the fourth round.
Having rotated nine players into his starting lineup following Sunday’s Premier League setback, manager Xabi Alonso was forced to act fast when Leeds doubled their advantage.
The visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute when Tarik Muharemović powered home a far-post header from a corner. Leeds hit the ground running again right after the break. In the 48th minute, Ethan Ampadu drove to the touchline, feeding Lukas Nmecha, whose clever backheel set up Brenden Aaronson to finish into an open net and put Leeds 2-0 ahead.
Cue the tactical masterstroke. Alonso rang the changes at half-time, sending on talisman Cole Palmer, playmaker Morgan Rogers, winger Pedro Neto, and captain Reece James. The impact was immediate and destructive.
In the 53rd minute, Pep Chavarría was wiped out in the penalty box by Daniel James. Up stepped Cole Palmer to coolly stroke the penalty into the bottom corner. Barely 120 seconds later, Palmer produced magic again, picking up a flick from Morgan Rogers, shifting past his marker, and wrong-footing Leeds keeper Michael Zetterer to tie the score at 2-2.
Chelsea were now playing with unstoppable momentum. On the hour mark, Rogers glided past defenders and threaded a defense-splitting pass for Pedro Neto to smash off the inside of the post into the net. Five minutes later, Rogers grabbed his third assist of the night, setting up Danny Welbeck to sweep past Zetterer from close range to make it 4-2.
Leeds briefly threatened a comeback in the 75th minute when substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin steered a low finish into the far corner off Noah Okafor’s cross. But Valentín Barco restored Chelsea’s cushion in the 80th minute, smashing a low drive into the bottom corner after Leeds failed to clear their lines. In stoppage time, Barco’s off-target shot was expertly steered home by Welbeck’s forehead to cap off a breathtaking 6-3 victory.
The match statistics painted a picture of two contrasting halves and sheer attacking efficiency. Leeds dominated the early proceedings and finished the match with 18 total shots, beating Chelsea’s tally of 16. Leeds also won the battle in the box with 36 touches inside the penalty area compared to Chelsea’s 22, while also edgeing the duels won at 52 percent and commanding 61 percent of aerial duels.
However, Chelsea’s lethal precision in front of goal completely tipped the scales. The Blues put eight of their 16 shots on target, whereas Leeds managed six on target from their 18 attempts.
Chelsea created five big chances and converted four of them, while Leeds netted only two of their four big opportunities.
Chelsea also excelled in transition, achieving a 68 percent success rate in final-third phase actions compared to Leeds’ 60 percent, supported by 14 interceptions defensively.
Overall possession was almost evenly split at 51 percent for Leeds and 49 percent for Chelsea, but the second-half wizardry of Cole Palmer—who logged five shots, two key passes, and five ball recoveries in just 45 minutes—proved to be the ultimate difference maker in Stamford Bridge’s wild night of cup action.
