SCOTLAND YARD undercover teams and high-speed pursuit riders have rounded up more than 185 suspects in a massive sting operation targeting Central London’s dreaded e-bike and moped phone-snatching gangs.
The major blitz across Westminster saw 187 criminals put in cuffs, 157 illegal vehicles impounded, and hundreds of stolen mobile phones recovered.
Officers deployed high-powered Sur-Ron e-bikes, unmarked vehicles, and foot patrols into hotspot zones—including Soho, Lambeth, Southwark, Waterloo, and London Bridge—to target thieves using modified bikes to swipe valuables and dodge the law.
In one high-stakes bust, a 22-year-old wanted robber slammed his illegal e-bike directly into an officer while making a desperate bid for freedom.
He was tackled to the pavement by a fellow cop and caught with a stash of stolen mobile phones wrapped in tin foil in a failed attempt to block their GPS tracking signals. The suspect was charged with robbery and assaulting an emergency worker before being remanded to Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.
During another dramatic chase, plain-clothed officers spotted a 17-year-old teen riding a moped linked to a mobile theft earlier that morning. Following a brief pursuit, the youth was intercepted and searched, revealing a concealed knife. He was charged with driving offences and possession of an offensive weapon, and was bailed to appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on October 1.
A third arrest in Soho saw a 23-year-old suspect flee on foot as officers approached, dropping a knife during the chase before being pinned down and arrested for weapon possession.
The six-month blitz, which ran from February to July, triggered a massive 22% plunge in e-bike-related crime across tourist hubs such as Waterloo and London Bridge.
Detective Superintendent Gareth Gilbert, who led the operation, said:
”Through targeted operations like this, we are staying one step ahead of the criminals who use high-powered bikes or mopeds to steal from Londoners.
”By disrupting this criminality and making hundreds of arrests, we’re making London a safer place to live, work and visit. Our approach is working, with neighbourhood crime down 14 per cent over the past year and 13,000 fewer phone thefts.”
Metropolitan Police Chiefs confirmed they have quintupled their fleet of specialized, high-powered Sur-Ron e-bikes from 5 to 25. The specialized bikes allow pursuit officers to chase suspects through crowded pedestrian streets and narrow alleyways where traditional squad cars cannot follow.
In addition to targeting individual gang members, police seized over 2,500 illegal and modified e-bikes and e-scooters across London roads this year alone.
The tactical shift comes as broader Metropolitan Police figures show personal theft and phone snatching down 15.6% across the capital in 2026, with overall robbery falling by 12.8%. Last year alone, Met officers seized 676 firearms and 2,894 knives from London streets.
