THE Turkish title race was blown into a frantic frenzy last night as Trabzonspor claimed a seismic 2-1 victory over league leaders Galatasaray at a deafening Papara Park.
In a clash billed as the “Battle of the Titans,” it was the Black Sea Storm that reigned supreme, snapping Galatasaray’s nine-match unbeaten streak against them and moving within striking distance of the summit. The result leaves the Istanbul giants looking over their shoulders as Fatih Tekke’s side proved they are no longer just “dark horses” but genuine championship thoroughbreds.
THE TOWER OF POWER
The night belonged to one man: Paul Onuachu. The Nigerian skyscraper, who has been in unplayable form, proved why he is the Super Lig’s most feared marksman. Onuachu opened the scoring with a trademark header that left the Galatasaray defense looking like statues, marking his eighth consecutive league game with a goal.
His physical presence was a constant nightmare for the visitors, who were sorely missing the defensive shielding of their own stars. With Victor Osimhen sidelined through injury and Leroy Sané suspended, Galatasaray lacked the clinical edge required to silence the home crowd.
DRAMA AT THE PARK
The hosts doubled their lead midway through the second half when Felipe Augusto capitalized on a defensive lapse, firing a low drive past the sprawling Andre Onana. For a moment, the league leaders looked shell-shocked, their usual composure deserting them under the relentless pressure of the Trabzon midfield.
Galatasaray did manage to claw one back late on to set up a grandstand finish, but the Trabzonspor rear-guard—marshaled by an inspired performance in goal—held firm.
TITLE RACE REIGNITED
Okan Buruk’s men still hold a slim advantage at the top, but the momentum has shifted. Trabzonspor have now racked up six straight league wins, and with Onuachu scoring for fun, the “Storm” is gathering pace at exactly the right time.
For the Galatasaray faithful, it was a bitter pill to swallow on the road. For the rest of the Super Lig, it’s game on.
