July 5, 2014 – It was Netherlands that had the upper hand against Costa Rica beating the team 4:3 on penalties.
Hard fighting Costa Rica however gave a good account of themselves holding Netherlands to a barren draw after 120 minutes. It was a tension soaked match with Costa Rica proving to be a very hard nut to crack warding very pungent strikes from the rampaging Dutch side.
It was indeed the most breathtaking encounter in the World Cup series taking place in Brazil.
Krul was brought in preparation for the penalty shoot out and succeeded in saving two shots to put Netherlands in the Semi- finals. Netherlands will now meet Argentina in the Semi-finals, while Brazil will play Germany.
