PORT HARCOURT- The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has restated its commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women in the Niger Delta, as it marks the 2025 International Women’s Day across the nine states of the region.

Speaking at the Women’s Day programme in Owerri, Imo State, the NDDC State Director, Sir Kelechi Nwelue, paid tribute to the critical role women play in shaping families, communities, and nations.

He remarked that this year’s celebration, with the theme “Accelerate Action,” was organised in commemoration of International Women’s Day and showcased the NDDC’s continued dedication to inclusive development and the advancement of women in society.

He said, “Women are central to everything we do at the NDDC, and that is why we celebrate you every year. Your contributions to peace-building, development, and nationhood are enormous, and we remain committed to supporting and empowering you.”

“Since its inception 25 years ago, the NDDC has been a catalyst for transformation in the Niger Delta. Today, as we honour women, we recognise that without a woman, there is no home, and without a home, there is no nation,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the NDDC Director of Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs. Ahuna Imoni, emphasised the inclusive leadership of the Commission’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

“Dr. Ogbuku is a champion for women. Under his leadership, for the first time in our history, the NDDC is officially celebrating International Women’s Day across the nine states. The female staff are not left out. No empowerment initiative is carried out without giving due consideration to women,” she stated.

She further commended the growing presence of women in leadership within the NDDC. “Women now head major directorates, which is a testament to the fact that women are not just support systems but leaders, peace-makers, and change agents. We are here to encourage every woman to raise her voice, take up space, and lead with integrity and purpose.”

The event featured several empowerment-focused sessions, including a wellness and community health awareness talk by the Imo State Commissioner for Health, Mrs. Chioma Egu. She stressed the importance of preventive healthcare, especially in rural areas, and encouraged women to prioritise their well-being.

A key facilitator, Mrs. Chioma Greywood Ogu, spoke on “Gender Inequality and Discrimination – How Women Can Reclaim Their Place Through Emotional Intelligence.” She highlighted the importance of self-awareness and emotional strength in overcoming societal barriers. “Emotional intelligence is a powerful tool that helps women lead, advocate, and thrive in male-dominated spaces,” she noted.

Participants across the region expressed gratitude for the initiative. One of them, Mrs. Charity Chukwu, said, “This event has reignited our confidence. We thank the NDDC for recognising the value of women and for providing a platform that uplifts our voices. We will return to our communities inspired to do more.”
