ABUJA — In what has been described as the largest single-day rescue mission in recent security operations, joint Nigerian security forces have successfully rescued over 300 hostages abducted by armed bandits and jihadist elements across North-Central and North-West communities.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally welcomed the freed citizens, hailing the intelligence-driven joint operational synergy between the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), and the Nigeria Police Force.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, a total of 308 victims were safely extracted during the high-stakes clearance operation inside the sprawling Kainji Lake National Park Forest.
Breakdown of the Operational Extraction
The rescued citizens comprise two major groups abducted during separate incursions by armed groups operating along state borders:
163 Victims from Kwara State: Resident survivors abducted from Woro village, a border community in Kwara State that suffered a devastating assault by armed attackers.
145 Victims from Niger State: Farmers and community members taken during recurring raids across farming settlements in Niger State.
Military sources disclosed that ground troops supported by aerial assets executed targeted strikes against identified camps deep inside the national park. Sensing overwhelming firepower, fleeing bandits abandoned their makeshift holding facilities, allowing tactical teams to secure and evacuate the victims without civilian casualties.
The rescued hostages have been transported to medical facilities for thorough psychological and physical health evaluations before being reunited with their families and state officials.
BACKGROUND TO THE STORY
1. The Rising Menace of Forest Hideouts
Over the past decade, Nigeria’s North-Central and North-West geopolitical zones have battled intense threats from armed criminal gangs—locally referred to as “bandits”—and expanding jihadist enclaves. Large, sparsely governed forest reserves like the Kainji Lake National Park, Kamuku Forest, and Sambisa have frequently been exploited by criminal non-state actors as launchpads for attacks, hostage storage, and logistics bases due to their dense foliage and vast geographical footprint.
2. The Woro Village Tragedy
The rescue resolves one of the most troubling mass-abduction incidents reported in the Kwara-Benin border corridor. Suspected armed extremists had previously targeted Woro village, razing homes, inflicting casualties, and marching dozens of villagers into the forest fastness. The incident prompted President Tinubu to order an immediate deployment of military reinforcements and heightened intelligence monitoring to track the perpetrators.
3. Strategic Shift to Joint Inter-Agency Operations
Historically, counter-insurgency operations faced challenges related to departmental silos and inter-agency friction. However, recent campaigns—including operations under Operation Fansan Yamma and national counter-terrorism taskforces—have adopted unified intelligence sharing, joint special forces deployments, and real-time drone reconnaissance.
This operational shift has degraded bandit command structures in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, and Bauchi states, leading to the dismantling of numerous strongholds and the ongoing recovery of illicit arms.
Reactions and Next Steps
Praising the military high command and intelligence leadership, the Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to completely clearing forest hideouts nationwide.
”This landmark rescue demonstrates what can be achieved when our security apparatus operates as a single, synchronized force. We will not relent until every forest enclave occupied by criminal forces is reclaimed by the State,” statement from the Presidency noted.
Security analysts have urged government authorities to follow up military gains with sustained civil-military relations, permanent forward operating bases (FOBs) within cleared forest reserves, and community-level economic stabilization projects to prevent criminals from regrouping.
