JERUSALEM — The Israeli military launched a wave of retaliatory airstrikes across southern Lebanon after an explosive device detonated during a search operation in a border village, killing two Israeli reserve soldiers and severely wounding four others.
The fallen soldiers were identified by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as Major (Res.) Harel Birenstock, 34, a company commander from Nokdim, and Sergeant Major (Res.) Tamir Vaknin, 33, a combat soldier from Eilat. Both were serving in Battalion 2855 of the 55th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade.
The fatal blast occurred in the southern Lebanese village of Majdal Zoun. According to initial military probes, Israeli troops entered a booby-trapped building during operations intended to search and dismantle militant infrastructure. Upon entry, an explosive device detonated, causing a partial collapse of the structure and trapping several servicemen beneath the rubble. Military investigators are actively probing whether the device was planted prior to recent operational arrangements or remotely detonated by Hezbollah operatives observing the forces.
Calling the incident a serious violation of operational arrangements, the IDF responded over a 24-hour period with targeted airstrikes and artillery fire. The military stated its forces struck several Hezbollah strategic targets in southern Lebanon, including weapons storage facilities, command posts, and frontline terror infrastructure.
”IDF soldiers remain deployed in the Security Zone in southern Lebanon in accordance with the agreement and will continue to operate to remove threats to Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers,” the Israeli military said in an official statement.
The cross-border exchange marks one of the most serious flare-ups along the Israeli-Lebanese frontier since diplomatic efforts established a tentative security arrangement earlier this summer.
Under terms coordinated through international mediators, Israeli forces maintain a presence in designated areas within a southern Lebanese security buffer while search and clearing operations continue.
The village of Majdal Zoun sits in a sector near Tyre where Hezbollah has historically built deep underground networks and booby-trapped installations embedded within civilian architecture. For months, Israeli engineers and infantry forces have worked to identify and destroy hidden weapons caches, rocket launch pads, and command bunkers entrenched in local communities.
Despite ongoing US-mediated talks aimed at formalizing border stability and preventing full-scale confrontation, enforcement remains precarious.
Israeli officials emphasize that military activity in southern Lebanon will proceed unimpeded as long as armed groups retain explosive hazards or attempt to rebuild launch capabilities near the border.
Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities have reported civilian displacement and injuries in neighboring towns following the recent barrage of Israeli strikes.
