IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – A 40-year-old motorcycle rider, Olisehyem Livingstone, who allegedly assaulted a police officer with a plank, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Livingstone, who resides at No. 119, Agbado in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos, is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, assault and occasioning harm. According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp Benson Emuerhi, the accused committed the offences on July 18 at 4.00 p.m. at Wemco Road, Ikeja.

Emuerhi said the accused beat up the police officer, Sgt. Gbenga Ayebo and used a plank to hit him on the head, causing him grievous harm.

He said that the accused was intercepted by a patrol team attached to area ‘F’ Command while riding his motorcycle on a restricted road.

“On sighting the police officer, the rider jumped off the bike in a bid to escape. The police then seized the motorcycle and put it in their patrol van, but the accused suddenly jumped into the van with some hoodlums in a bid to retrieve the bike. The accused attacked the complainant with the plank,” he said.

Emuerhi also alleged that the accused vandalised the patrol van with registration number PF 54.

He said the police found out that he had stolen the motorcycle with registration number QW 283 MW belonging to one Hycent Ekuem. The offences contravenes Sections 174, 287, 350 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three- year jail term for offenders. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

Sule-Amzat said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government. In addition, the sureties should be related to the accused. The case was adjourned until Nov. 22 for mention.
