LONDON — The “Prince of Darkness” is back in the shadows today after a dramatic police swoop linked to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
Lord Peter Mandelson, the former UK Ambassador to the US and architect of New Labour, has been released on bail following a high-stakes arrest that has sent shockwaves through Westminster.
The 72-year-old was hauled into custody on Monday afternoon after plainclothes officers descended on his £8million London home.
The charge? Suspicion of misconduct in public office.
After hours of questioning, the veteran politician was seen returning to his Camden residence in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed:
”A 72-year-old man arrested on Monday, 23 February, on suspicion of misconduct in public office has been released on bail pending further enquiries.”
The arrest follows the release of a massive trove of “Epstein Files” by the US Justice Department.
The documents allegedly paint a damning picture of the Peer’s relationship with the billionaire paedophile.
Investigators are reportedly probing claims that Mandelson:
Allegedly tipped off Epstein about a €500bn EU bailout during the financial crisis.
Provided “advance notice” on UK banking policy and taxes on bankers’ bonuses.
Documents reportedly show $75,000 in payments from Epstein to accounts linked to Mandelson or his partner.
It is a staggering collapse for the man who once ran the country alongside Tony Blair. Only months ago, Mandelson was living the high life in Washington D.C. as Britain’s top diplomat.
He was sensationally sacked by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September 2025 after his ties to Epstein became “untenable.”
His arrest comes just days after Prince Andrew was also questioned by police in what is being called the “Great Epstein Purge” of the British establishment.
Mandelson has consistently denied any wrongdoing, previously describing his association with Epstein as a “regret” that has become an “albatross” around his neck.
Known as the “Prince of Darkness,” Mandelson was the mastermind behind the 1997 Labour landslide.
He famously resigned from the Cabinet twice under Tony Blair—once over a home loan scandal and later over a passport row.
In a controversial move, Keir Starmer appointed him Ambassador to the US in early 2025 to handle the “special relationship” with Donald Trump.
His downfall was triggered by DOJ documents revealing he called Epstein his “best pal” in a 2003 birthday book and continued the friendship long after Epstein’s 2008 conviction.
