LAGOS, Nigeria – A major political showdown is looming in Nigeria’s capital tomorrow as activist Omoyele Sowore vows to push ahead with a massive protest demanding the unconditional release of jailed Biafran separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The ‘Free Nnamdi Kanu Now’ rally, scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, is set to put security forces on high alert after a court attempted to curb the demonstration’s scope.

Sowore, the firebrand convener of the #RevolutionNow movement and a former presidential candidate, is mobilizing his supporters to pressure the Nigerian government over Kanu’s prolonged detention.

His supporters are brandishing previous court rulings that called for Kanu’s freedom as justification.

But a Federal High Court in Abuja has thrown a huge spanner in the works. While approving the right to protest, the court imposed a draconian restriction, banning demonstrators from marching to or even assembling near key national institutions, including the Presidential Aso Rock Villa and the National Assembly.

The Nigeria Police Force has already been ramping up security and tried—and failed—to halt the rally via court action, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation.

Sowore has vowed to challenge the restrictive court order, insisting the demonstration will proceed.

The drama is being fanned by furious political intrigue.
Sowore’s efforts to build a “broad alliance”—reportedly even involving opposition figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—have hit a major snag: prominent Igbo leaders have publicly disowned the march.

The powerful Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organisation slammed the protest as a “cynical ploy” by rival politicians seeking to create chaos, stating they prefer to pursue an established legal or political solution for Kanu’s release.

This disavowal adds another layer of tension, especially after the Department of State Services (DSS) previously alleged that Sowore and Kanu had conspired to overthrow the government.

The march is guaranteed to draw renewed global attention to the Kanu crisis, but its success hinges on whether the massive security presence can keep the demonstration from spiralling into a full-blown street clash.
