WASHINGTON – FORMER US President Joe Biden is locked in a brave new fight for his life after revealing an aggressive prostate cancer has spread to his skeleton.
The 82-year-old Democrat is now undergoing intense radiation and hormone therapy in a bid to halt the killer disease.
A spokesperson confirmed the bombshell update yesterday, saying the treatment was part of the plan to tackle the cancer first diagnosed just months after he left the White House.
Biden, who turns 83 next month, was diagnosed with the fast-spreading prostate cancer in May, following a check-up over urinary issues.
His medical team previously confirmed the cancer had a highly aggressive Gleason score of 9 and had already “metastasized to the bone.”
The devastating news comes after the former leader, whose age and health were constant sources of controversy during his time in office, has already been on hormone medication since the initial diagnosis.
The five-week radiation course marks a serious escalation in his battle.
Mr Biden left the White House in January after dropping his re-election campaign last year following a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump, which put his fitness for the job under the spotlight.
The former President also underwent surgery just last month to remove cancerous lesions from his forehead.
The news is a tragic echo for the Biden family, whose son Beau tragically died of brain cancer in 2015.
The ex-President has previously said: “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, especially the elderly, but the aggressive spread to bone means a long and difficult road ahead for the former leader.
