WASHINGTON / TEHRAN — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Tuesday that it launched a major ballistic missile attack targeting a U.S. military installation in southern Jordan. The strike marks a dangerous escalation in the ongoing direct military confrontations between Washington and Tehran.
The IRGC stated that the barrage—codenamed Operation “Ya Muhammad ibn Abdullah”—targeted Camp Titin, an outpost hosting U.S. Marines along the Gulf of Aqaba in southern Jordan. The Iranian military apparatus claimed the attack destroyed key military assets, including attack helicopters, and caused extensive casualties.
The Pentagon has not independently verified the claims or confirmed casualty figures.
Strike Follows Deadly Attack in Hormozgan
According to the IRGC statement, the missile strike was launched in direct retaliation for a recent U.S. military attack that struck a civilian residence hosting a wedding ceremony in Sirik, located in Iran’s coastal Hormozgan province.
Iranian state media reported that the strike in Sirik resulted in nearly 50 casualties, including the deaths of four civilians—among them a young child. Tehran condemned the attack as a “criminal act,” drawing comparisons to past historical strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure.
U.S. officials have acknowledged ongoing military operations in the region targeting IRGC assets and commercial shipping threats near the Strait of Hormuz, though the military has not formally addressed the specific allegations surrounding the Sirik strike.
The exchange highlights a sharp degradation of security across the Middle East following months of tit-for-tat operations involving U.S. forces, Iran, and allied proxy groups.
Camp Titin, located near the strategic Port of Aqaba, has served as a joint training and support hub for U.S. Marines and regional partner forces, including the Royal Jordanian Armed Forces. An attack on a sovereign facility within Jordan represents a critical widening of the theater of operations.
In its statement, the IRGC warned that its retaliatory campaign remains active. U.S. defense officials confirmed that air defense systems in Jordan and across Central Command’s area of operations were placed on high alert as military command assesses the impact of the incoming missiles.
