DONALD TRUMP was sensationally urged to “step back from the precipice” of global conflict last night by the leader of America’s Catholics.
In an extraordinary intervention that has rocked Washington, Archbishop Paul Coakley warned that the world is teetering on the edge of a disaster that could “destroy a whole civilization.”
The President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the blistering plea as tensions reached a breaking point, explicitly telling the Commander-in-Chief that his current military path “cannot be morally justified.”
‘NOT MORALLY JUSTIFIED’
The Archbishop’s intervention comes amid fears of a massive escalation in a rapidly deteriorating international crisis.
In a direct message to the Oval Office, Archbishop Coakley said: “The threat of destroying a whole civilization and the intentional targeting of civilian infrastructure cannot be morally justified.
“I call on President Trump to step back from the precipice of war and negotiate a just settlement for the sake of peace and before more lives are lost.”
The rare and stinging rebuke from the religious establishment highlights the growing panic over the President’s hardline stance.
CIVILIAN FEARS
Church leaders are understood to be “gravely concerned” by reports of military planning that include strikes on infrastructure used by millions of innocent families.
The USCCB, which represents more than 60 million Catholics across America, has traditionally tried to keep a distance from White House military strategy.
But sources say the “apocalyptic” scale of the current threat forced the Archbishop to go public with his demand for a “just settlement.”
The dramatic standoff follows weeks of soaring rhetoric and military posturing that has left the international community on edge.
While the White House has maintained a “peace through strength” policy, critics fear the President is being boxed into a corner where a full-scale war becomes inevitable.
The Archbishop’s demand for a “just settlement” puts massive pressure on the Trump administration to return to the negotiating table before the first missiles are fired.
Last night, a White House source remained defiant, but the “Holy Row” is expected to embolden anti-war protesters who have been gathering in their thousands across the globe.
The world now waits to see if the President will heed the warning from the pulpit—or continue his march toward the brink.
