ENUGU— Suspected armed hoodlums have launched a vicious attack on a grassroots mobilization gathering of the Nigerianl Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, leaving several party faithful hospitalized with severe gunshot injuries.
The violent disruption, which occurred during a crucial strategy session aimed at strengthening the party’s local structures, resulted in utter chaos as the assailants fired sporadically into the crowd. Fleeing attendees triggered a stampede, compounding the injuries sustained during the brazen daylight attack.
Vanguard gathered that the gunmen, who arrived in unmarked vehicles, heavily armed and their faces concealed, immediately cordoned off the perimeter of the venue before unleashing terror on the unarmed politicians.
Eyewitnesses report that the attackers did not state any demands or attempt to kidnap any of the political figures present. Instead, their primary objective appeared to be the absolute disruption of the gathering and the intimidation of the party members.
After dispersing the crowd with gunfire, the assailants systematically vandalized the venue. Plastic chairs were shattered, canopies slashed, public address systems destroyed, and vehicles parked within the vicinity were severely damaged.
Good Samaritans and surviving party members swiftly evacuated the bleeding victims to undisclosed medical facilities within the Enugu metropolis, where they are currently battling various degrees of gunshot wounds.
Local NDC leaders have strongly condemned the unprovoked assault, describing it as a calculated attempt by anti-democratic forces to silence opposition voices and stifle political participation at the grassroots level.
They are calling on the Enugu State Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS) to launch an immediate, thorough investigation to unmask the perpetrators and their political sponsors.
At the time of filing this report, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer could not be reached for official comments, but police patrol vans have reportedly been deployed to the affected area to restore normalcy and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The South-East region of Nigeria, including Enugu State, has experienced a disturbing wave of insecurity in recent years, often characterized by the activities of “unknown gunmen.”
While state governments and federal security agencies have heavily cracked down on these elements, sporadic attacks on political gatherings, government facilities, and security checkpoints still occur.
Historically, grassroots political mobilization in the region has become a high-risk endeavor.
During election cycles and party restructuring phases, political actors often face threats from militant separatist groups enforcing sit-at-home orders, as well as rival political factions utilizing armed thugs for voter suppression and intimidation.
For the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—a party working to deepen its foothold in a region traditionally dominated by older, established political blocs—this attack underscores the perilous environment in which emerging political movements operate.
The violence not only threatens the immediate safety of party members but also risks fostering voter apathy.
When grassroots meetings become targets for armed violence, the electorate is naturally discouraged from participating in the democratic process, threatening the very foundation of local governance and political pluralism in Enugu State.
